Safari Lodges
Saruni Mara

Saruni Mara is located in a remote valley bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Saruni lodge was a design and build project for Mark. The owner Riccardo Orrizio having traveled through Kenya as a tourist, came to the conclusion Kenya was to be his home.
The design brief was to construct six cottages that gave the feeling of being in a tent yet provided a bit more shelter from the elements than a tent would offer. The cottages and Tembo house is perched on the hill side, each with a stunning view over the Mara. The ‘Tembo” house is a large open plan space, exposed on one side to give one the feeling of the wild.

All the buildings are cantilevered out from the hill side. Perched on Eucalyptus support structures, with Cyprus decking. Larger Eucalyptus poles provide the uprights for the roof structure. Makuti from the Kenyan coast which is a sustainable material gave the organic finish the client required. The walls were a combination of ferrous cement, and stretched canvas, between timber uprights.
